After completing her Bachelor of Arts in Musical Studies at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, Carolina Noguera Palau obtained her PhD and Master’s degrees in composition at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (Birmingham City University, UK). She received an ORSAS award (Overseas Research Students Awards Scheme), and she was also supported by the Central Bank of Colombia, the Birmingham Conservatoire in England and Colfuturo. She studied composition with Guillermo Gaviria, Richard Causton and Lamberto Coccioli and, occasionally, with Edwin Roxbourgh, Howard Skempton, John Woolrich, Rebecca Saunders, and many other renowned musicians. She has composed musical works for a variety of ensembles and soloists, which have been performed in Europe, North and South America. Her production has been recognized through awards such as the Creation Grant by the Colombian Ministry of Culture (2005), the 2006 Composition Award by the Secretary Office of Recreation and Sport of Bogota (IDCT in Spanish) and, in 2003, the Città di Udine Composition Prize (Italy), the IAWM New Music Competition (USA), as well as the Biennial Award for Artistic Creation at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in 2016.

Noguera is interested in re-signifying pre-existing musical material from traditional Colombian rhythms, which she studies and re-elaborates with a special interest in both texture and timbre. Throughout the years, her aesthetic reflection, as well as her work, have been focused on migrating all kinds of sounds from their usual context, in order to find different and special spirits and meanings in such journeys.

She is currently the Coordinator of the Composition Area of the Music Department, a branch of the School of Arts at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá – Colombia.
